FAQ

Questions people ask

Who are the best house music artists of all time?

Start with the pioneers: Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan, Ron Hardy, Marshall Jefferson and Larry Heard. Then Masters at Work, Kerri Chandler and Daft Punk from the 1990s, and Black Coffee and Honey Dijon today.

Who are the most popular house artists?

By monthly listeners, the biggest names right now include Fred again.., Disclosure, FISHER, John Summit, ANOTR, Cloonee and James Hype. Popular is not the same as essential: start with the roots (Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard, Marshall Jefferson), then work forward.

Who is the queen of house music?

There is no official crown. The title has been given to several vocalists who defined the sound, most often Ultra Naté, Crystal Waters and Barbara Tucker.

What’s the difference between house and EDM?

House is a specific genre born in Chicago in the early 1980s: four-to-the-floor drums, usually 118–130 BPM, built on disco, soul and gospel. EDM is a broad marketing umbrella from the 2010s that covers big-room, dubstep, trap and some house.

Who invented house music?

No single person. The name comes from the Warehouse in Chicago, where Frankie Knuckles played from 1977. Jesse Saunders’ “On and On” (1984) is often called the first house record, and Ron Hardy, Larry Heard and Marshall Jefferson shaped the sound that followed.
